Black Myth: Wukong Review

anniversary-login-rewards.pngBlack Myth: Wukong pulls a lot of its story from the Journey to the West novel. It is regarded as the greatest piece of classical Chinese literature for being both an epic adventure and filled with heart and comedy. **Black Myth: Wukong is definitely telling a darker version of this story ** and will be the highest-budgeted adaptation of Journey to the West in video game f

However, Black Myth: Wukong , unlike the sprawling Elden Ring , is not an open-world game. Instead, players will explore gorgeous linear, interconnected environments akin to the original Dark Souls games. These take place across varied and dynamic landscapes inspired by both Chinese mythology and the Journey to the West st

One of the biggest questions fans have had about Black Myth Wukong Secrets Myth: Wukong is whether it will simply be a boss rush game from start to finish or if players will experience the same level of freedom and side content generally found in a standard modern action RPG. Thankfully, Game Science has confirmed that the world would eventually open up for players to meet new NPCs, acquire side quests, and uncover plenty of secrets. Regardless, it's still refreshing to see the final trailer for Black Myth: Wukong open with an environmental showcase, as if to reassure the game's followers that its world is much bigger than a mere boss r

Eventually, the trailer ties a bow on it all with over a dozen brief glimpses at many of Black Myth: Wukong 's terrifying bosses , including a dragon, a massive troll, a rock monster, and a dual sword-wielding character that looks like a tough time. Other scenes near the end of the final trailer, like one of the Destined One placing a mask on a statue to open a large door, have very little context, so it's impossible to know what all of it means. One particular scene of a blood moon could be the cinematic introduction to a boss fight, as blood moons are considered a sign of impending doom in Chinese cult

While Lingxuzi does jump atop the roofs of some surrounding buildings, it is just so that he can gain the high ground before lunging at you, which isn't a move that is unique to how the environment can be used effectively. However, Whiteclad Noble uses his environment more effectively, dipping in and out of the water and utilizing it in his inherent atta

Oddly enough, the localization into English has been done with mixed results. On one hand, the voice work is surprisingly good, even though there’s no lip-syncing. That we can forgive, but there are huge chunks of the game, at least pre-launch, where full journal entries and even button prompts in the world that weren’t translated. Obviously, since this is text, these can be patched in, but these are issues we noticed.

Combat is arguably the weakest component to Black Myth: Wukong , but that’s still not saying much considering the package as a whole is woven together so nicely. Because you are playing essentially as a young Sun Wukong, the only weapon you’re given is a staff. This can be upgraded into various types of staff, such as ones that focus on critical hits or others that lean towards defense, but it’s still a single weapon that doesn’t have too much variety in how it’s used.

This has elements of Souls games, but it’s closer to a traditional action game. You won’t be managing attributes, but instead be given skill points that can be spent to level up specific abilities within the protagonist’s arsenal. This includes mystical arts, martial arts and transformations, just to name a few. This is where Combat really shines as, while the majority of the time you will be slamming the light attack button until your Focus meter is charged up, allowing you to unleash a devastating heavy attack, it’s splicing in different unique abilities in-between that make it more compelling.

Several other characters are revealed in the final trailer for Black Myth: Wukong , including an old man with a large gourd on his back, a person in a cracked white mask, another canine humanoid, a woman in a dark cave seen tossing a dagger in the air, a character wearing what appears to be a white Oni mask, and several others. It feels obvious that some of these characters will be friends of the Destined One while others will be enemies, but that is purely speculation. At the very least, the appearance of so many unique characters in the world of Black Myth: Wukong helps reinforce its narrat

The lack of diversity and inclusivity resonates with the misogynistic comments reported to have been made by developers, which expressed disdain for women playing their games. Although Black Myth: Wukong does have truly enjoyable moments, the underlying feeling that women aren't welcome in this world felt present throughout my gameplay experie

Wandering Wight is no exception, one of the first proper bosses you'll encounter in the game's first chapter . You might assume that would make him a bit of a pushover, but it unfortunately has a ton of health, hits like a truck, and is a real test of skill despite you having had less than an hour of playtime under your belt. Thankfully, we're here to give you a h
